Vanity
- Why your teeth yellow? asked Chalerm one day, when I sat close to the window and he got a good look.
- I don’t know, I said.
- I not see before, said Chalerm. - Not beautiful.
- It is only a little yellow, I said.
- I think you can go dentist, said Chalerm. - Can make white.
Since Chalerm said this I can conveniently blame him for my vanity. I have thought about having my teeth bleached for a while. It costs about 10,000 baht in Bangkok and they do it in an hour, using so-called laser treatment.
But my distrust of Thai doctors extend to Thai dentists. I wanted to ask my dentist in Farangland first.
I have used the same farang dentist for 20 years. He is good. He has integrity too, never recommending anything expensive if it can wait, never trying to sell me something I don’t need.
- We don’t recommend the one hour procedure, said my dentist. - Some do it but the stuff they use is too strong. 35% oxide. It can dry out your teeth and damange them. Apply 10% or 15% oxide instead, at home, over several days.
The dentist took an imprint of my upper and lower jaw using what he said was an algae-based material. It tasted funny. He cleaned my teeth and said I should wait a couple of days.
I then came back when they had made rails for me. I will use them when I am back in Bangkok. I will put the oxide stuff in the rails, attach them to my teeth and go to sleep. Repeat five days upper teeth and then five days lower teeth.
I should flush with fluoride daily to avoid sensitive teeth while doing the whitening, said the dentist.
The cost is 15,000 baht. A farang friend said unkindly: - You can do this but you will still be a gay man over 40.
I will tell you how it goes.

I’ve read your story.. it’s drawn me into your world. I think it’s interesting.. in a kind of ’slice of life’ way. Chalerm seems less than loving and supportive.. how does that affect you ? and if it’s not too personal a question.. what are the dynamics of your sex life like, now that you’ve both matured within your relationship and lived with one another for several years ?

I’ve wanted to do this, too. I burned all my enamel off years ago, and have a less-than-dazzling smile these days (if you subtract the personality).
Good luck with it.
Oh, and there’s nothing wrong with being a gay man over 40. (Just saying . . . .)

You might still be a gay man over 40 but you will have a dazzling smile!

At least you are not a straight man over 40.
