Christmas in Bangkok
Number One the unemployed boy called and wanted to meet me. I was in a shopping centre buying Christmas gifts and a tree. I told him he could come and help me.
Number One showed up and did Sherpa duty in two shopping centres without complaining. But first I gave him a thousand baht. This was to establish the rules – the bank note was what he was getting and nothing more.
Chalerm called me on the phone while I was with Number One and said he had changed his mind. He would go to Anyburi right away, on Christmas Eve. I had to stop whatever I was doing and come home (and unsaid, give him money for the trip).
- But I am buying Christmas gifts and a tree, I said.
- Up to you, said Chalerm.
- Do you want Christmas or not?
- Is not my festival.
I was annoyed. Chalerm might not know that changing plans on Christmas Eve is a gross breach of etiquette for a Westerner. But he was about to find out.
A little devil whispered in my ear: Now that you have Number One following you around you might as well accept his wish and take him home. I took Number One home. He wanted to see additional photos I had taken of him the year before.
Chalerm was grumpy but wai’ed the guest. Then Chalerm disappeared to the bedroom and Number One and I decorated the Christmas tree. Number One was good at it despite this being his first time.
Then Number One and I looked at his photos on the computer.
Chalerm came back and I asked him when he was going to Anyburi. Suddenly Chalerm was not so eager to go. Suddenly he had plans for a special evening with me instead.
Chalerm asked where I knew Number One from and repeated “Pattaya?” in a dismissive tone. Number One said nothing.
Number One had a proposal for me. How about if I put a thousand baht in his bank account every week? I regret to say that made me laugh.
Number One went home in a taxi while the Queen of Si Saket arrived. I think we are supposed to go out to eat.

I am glad that xmas with your bf is working out for you, although it took some clever maneuvering ! I was going to say that you might be setting a difficult precedent with Number One, but perhaps he ‘earned’ his money without knowing it.
I am in farangland and my bf is in Thailand. It is days like this that I wish we were together. But I don’t make a big deal of it with my bf. As Chalerm said, it is our festival not theirs.
I have never been in Thailand at xmas. Knowing how much Thai boys like presents (!), how aware are Thais of the present-giving element of xmas ? In your experience, do many Thai-farang couples exchange presents ?

With Christmas so ingrained in Westerners it seems most of them carry on the tradition even when living in a Buddhist country. The Thais quickly take to the gift giving and they are happy to use any excuse for a party.
