The first night after coming back to Bangkok I woke at 4.40 am when someone rang the doorbell. It rang once, and after twenty seconds it rang again. I triedĀ fall asleep. I wasn’t expecting anyone at this hour.
I drifted back to sleepland, only to have the doorbell penetrate my snooze once more. And once more again. This person was not giving up.
Chalerm was sleeping. He doesn’t wake up easily. I poked him and asked if he was expecting anyone. He was not.
Chalerm went to the door and looked through the peep hole.
- You go back sleep, said Chalerm.
- I want to know who it is, I said.
- My friend, said Chalerm.
I opened the door. A Thai boy in his early 20s stood there. The Thai boy involuntarily took two steps back. I had never seen him before. He was surprised to see me. Obviously he had expected Chalerm to open the door.
- Yes? I said.
- Sorry, said the Thai boy.
The Thai boy began walking towards the lift. I heard the lift doors open and close.
Chalerm was watching the visitor through the split between the door and the wall. He had not let the friend see him.
- Is better if him go away, said Chalerm.
- Do they think this is a hotel? I asked.
It made me wonder what had been going on in The Mansion while I had been in Farangland. Had Chalerm ran a 24 hour guesthouse for gay boys?
I have a feeling Chalerm can find it hard to say no when friends or aquiantances ask him for favours like sleeping over, even if he doesn’t really like it. Hence he is relieved when I am there and can take the blame. The farang is back! No can stay!

Do they come only to sleep or is there more going on? Having an unkwown boy coming over at such a late time would make me somehow worried…

Worried is not what I would feel, at 4:40am I would be moohoo, angry. With the traffic in and out of your place, it’s a wonder that all your stuff has not been “borrowed.”

At my age, I don’t care what time the doorbell rings, as long as it rings. I always let the boys stay over. How heartless can you be, SF? You must still be quite young and have lots of time ahead of you in which to learn the error of your ways.
Now, are you sure you are not having a joke with us? Boys are comming to your door at four in the morning - and you’re sending them away? I will have to lie down. ( - but not fall asleep, in case the doorbell rings.)
