Yesterday was National Police Day in Thailand. The cops filled a large stadium to celebrate themselves and the event was sent live on television.
A fine lot they are, the policemen here. They have every reason to be proud of their achivements. Blackmail, protection rackets and bribe-taking are unheard of. No officers are involved in the sex or drug trades. Their stellar competence and high-tech investigation methods are second to none, and rumours that they rely mainly on beating people into confessing are not true at all.
Thai cops also have impressive financial skills. This makes it possible for them to drive cars worth millions of baht on small government salaries.
I read an interview with one “Mr Clean” policeman who said his was the only corruption-free police department. He also mentioned that, as a good father, he took his entire family to Europe for holiday every year.
I could tell the National Police Day was underway since there were no officers on the streets yesterday. Gangs of youth were free to do their illegal motorbike races on Rama 4 without any interference. I see nothing wrong with this. It is only reasonable to give the cops a day off to party and drink.
