Almost too good to be true
I found the perfect taxi driver when I returned from a visa run to Malaysia recently. He was a middle aged Thai-Chinese guy, a steady driver and a safe pair of hands. I asked for his phone number so I could hire him to take me to Pattaya next time I went to Sleazeville.
When I felt the pull of Sea, Sand and Sin again I called this driver. Sure, he said, he remembered I was the farang from the airport and where I lived. He would be there at 5pm.
As I mentioned this guy is perfect. He is so good he cares for my health and wants me to get enough fresh air. He did this by leaving me waiting for him outside The Mansion. He called and said he was just around the corner, complained about traffic and how he was lost in the one-way system. I waited and waited and spoke to him several times and he was always just around the corner.
I waited almost an hour for him. Many other perfectly perfect taxis went by while I waited, but I would have felt too guilty dropping the guy I was waiting for. I blame my mother for bringing me up too well.
I then saw the taxi pull up at the wrong building, poked my head out in the soi and waved him over. He was full of apologies. I told him never mind.
He did drive safely and sanely, unlike my previous driver who on his 3rd trip to Pattaya for me became such a daredevil zigzag takeover maniac I had to stop using him despite the entertainment value.
My perfect taxi driver cared for me and wanted to show me more of Chon Buri province. He did that by missing the exit to Pattaya. One should not think it was possible to miss Pattaya, and it has never happened to me before, but he did.
I was half asleep and paid no attention to the road, leaving the driving to my driver. But I did begin to wonder why the trip seemed longer than usual. At one point I was almost certain we were in Pattaya, but since we didn’t turn right I dismissed it as wishful thinking.
- Are you going to Sattahip? asked my driver.
I thought this was a strange question.
- No. I am going to Pattaya.
- Oh. I forgot, said the driver.
- Where are we?
- In Sattahip.
I was grateful for seeing Sattahip for the first time in my life, although it was dark and I only saw a road and a name sign. My driver had overshot Pattaya by 24 km, driving 48 km in total just to show me around. Is this great service or what?
We turned back and drove to Pattaya. Strangely he did not charge me extra for this side trip. He did not insist he would take me back to Bangkok when I was done in Pattaya either, as they usually do. He dropped me at my hotel and left in rather a hurry. One should almost think my perfect driver somehow had lost face.

Another reason why I will stick with the Bus from Ekahmai eventhou it can take 20 min. just to get out of the parking lot.

I can see your point of view…

So important to have a good and safe driver. The last time I went to Pattaya my travelling experience was so frightening that I swore I would never return….and three year on, I haven’t. I used a car and driver recommended by a friend who lives in Jomtien. I permanently had my foot through the floor, as he followed the well-worn practice of not allowing any braking room, especially driving at high speed. I had particularly wanted seat belts in the back. He had them, but they didn’t work properly, which added to the overall fea factor. I think the bus is probably a safer option, or indeed the one I’ve chosen….never returning!

I sit in the front passenger seat to use the seatbelts. Some drivers seem to resent this and want me at a suitable distance in the back, but I don’t care when my life is at stake.

I agree with samtam, Pattaya is grossly over-rated, getting there and gettin around is very hit or miss, I decided to give the whole place “a miss” years ago!

I use the same person all the time when I take a trip to BKK from Pattaya and when I arrive in LOS. He is trustworthy, reliable and a good safe driver.
