Chalerm has moved to a new room in Thonburi. He shares this one with another girl from his university. I don’t know why he moved but the new place doesn’t have a 9pm curfew like the old place had.
Thonburi is the part of Bangkok which is on the other side of the river. Most tourists never go there. There is not much to see. When you get away from the densely built zone along the river it becomes rural, with fields and trees and the odd shopping centre which must get customers from some hidden villages.
I once passed through Thonburi in a taxi at night and saw men and shirtless boys who were fishing from a bridge. I told the driver to turn back so I could talk to them. I am very interested in fishing.
The boys were friendly. Did I mention they were shirtless? With no shirts and no shoes the only thing they wore were their shorts.
The boys spoke no English and at the time I spoke no Thai. We didn’t get much further than smiling and using finger language. You got anything? Yes, a big one.
But a middle aged Thai-Chinese woman came walking by and gave me and the boys strict and suspicious looks. I have later learned this is a good sign. A reaction from a woman like her means something fishy is going on.
I am ashamed to admit I felt ashamed when she gave me that penetrating stare. She had caught me red-handed. She knew what I was up to. If it was today I would have ignored her. I have ticker skin now. But back then I felt bad when my keen interest in sea food had been exposed, and I left without any catch.
