I saw some gay boys in Udon Thani. Some were hairdressers, and one worked in a flower shop. I also saw some ladyboys go by on motorbikes. I waved to them.
I went to the park by sunset, and bought syrup pancakes from the guy at the entrance. I did not spot any gay life.
I rented a cycle taxi. It made me feel suitably colonial to have that poor guy pedal me around town.
I looked at the driver and my gaydar pinged.
- You sexy man, said the driver.
Thank you for confirming it, I thought.
Apart from a few boys like these it seemed anyone cute and gay had left for Pattaya already.
There were too many foreigners in Udon Thani. It was worse than in Bangkok. I came to Isaan thinking I would be one of a kind in this remote area, that I would be a rarity and a celebrity, and then the place was full of white men. The locals were bored with farangs already. Where do I have to go to get some star power these days?

I took a boy from Boy Boy Bar back to my hotel. I didn’t actually fancy him but I was bored and could not think of anything better to do. Maybe he could pose for some photos, or I could practice my Thai on him.
I brought out the camera. No, he didn’t want to have his picture taken, and in particular not shirtless.
I tried to chat with him about his life. He smiled that broad, exaggerated Thai smile which meant he was nervous and uncomfortable. The conversation didn’t get anywhere.
This young man was gay only for pay and I could tell he dreaded the situation. One should think he was waiting to have his teeth pulled out.
This is what I don’t understand about prostitution. How can a customer go ahead with the act if the service provider is so clearly reluctant? Maybe some customers are blessed with such poor social skills that they don’t understand how the boy feels? Or maybe some are so drunk and/or horny that they don’t care even if they see it? Or do they wait for the right provider, the rare one they really get along with and who isn’t reluctant?
Whatever the reasons people have, I could not have done it with someone like this nervous straight boy. I gave him money and sent him home.

You didnt fancy the boy in the 1st place and was bored at that time. Youre paying, remember? Of course your wish is his command.
And by the way, not everybody thinks like the cycle taxi driver… you sexy man! Err… what makes you think the boy fancy you too? Is this his way to ‘escape’ from you? LOL
Anyway, nice of you to pay him…

Sorry about the hard luck date. But thanks for the stories, anyway.

What about Laos. No gay boys in Laos?
