Your observations are quite brilliant I agree about the “character-forming torture and self-loathing” , I identify with much of what you say. I think my Thai Boyfriend is a clone of Chalerm in his habits /actions/ speech.. You even have the Thai peculiarities of terminology absolutely spot on. Buddhist merit for Christmas ? That’s an interesting concept.

There are still young gay ppl that falls into your “era” - perhaps you just dont know them.
They value and understand life more than the ’spoilt’ ones.
