Who stole my rent? (5)

gay-boy-diary.jpg

I went to the reception Saturday afternoon. This is usually a quiet time in the office, but for once they appeared busy. The receptionist was not there. Instead a new woman sat in her chair. I hope this means the embezzler no longer will be around. Maybe they kept her for a while to get information from her about what was missing?

I asked the manager about my receipt for January. The manager, a grandmother type, said she would give me one on Monday. They were so busy now, she said, “checking and sorting out things”.

As usual nobody explained what this checking and sorting outing was needed for. I was supposed to know that. And I understand what is going on. But it would be nice to have it confirmed. How much did the receptionist steal? From how many of the residents? And what was her story? Drugs? Gambling? Loan sharks? Pure stupidity?

I decided to put Chalerm on the case. I told him to ask the cleaning lady. She is the gossip queen of the building. I had expected Chalerm to wait till she came to our apartment to work, but Chalerm went right to the phone and called the reception. The reception fetched the cleaning lady and she told Chalerm nothing had happened and there was no problem and in any case it was over.

This was no way to gossip. You could not expect the cleaning lady to give us the dirty details while she was in the office and the others could hear her. I asked Chalerm to try again one on one.

When I met the cleaning lady in the stairs five minutes later I saw she walked in an unsteady way. She was drunk. Usually her husband is the drunk one. Now they were both drunk? Well, it was payday. The cleaning lady began talking in Thai but I didn’t understand what she said. I hope Chalerm can get something out of her.

Thai people, boyfriends in particular, operate on a strict ‘need to know’ basis. And farangs invariably don’t need to know. On the rare occasions that they do, they are expected to understand completely when provided with the barest snippets of information. Further questioning is neither necessary nor appreciated.

But when you make a mistake because of what they never told you they blame you.

In keeping with the theme of your topics, perhaps the old receptionist is “sleeping with the fishes.” :)

Oh dear. I hope they didn’t give her the fish penalty.
